Gotu kola (Centella Asiatica) is a creeping herb with fan-shaped leaves that grows in tropical and semi-tropical regions of India, Sri Lanka and other southern Asiatic countries. It has been used for centuries for bringing relief to such medical ailments and conditions as hepatitis, mental fatigue, epilepsy and asthma. Modern herbal medicine practitioners use the herb to treat conditions such as psoriatic and rheumatoid arthritis. Other names for this plant include centella and Indian pennywort.
Ancient Indian legends tell of mighty herds of elephants that were able to live long lives and possess remarkable memories due to eating the Gotu Kola plant. Even today, animals fed this plant for periods of time are able to develop learning skills much faster than those not fed this plant.
Usually found in marshy or swampy areas, Gota Kola has also been
used by Chinese medicine practitioners to treat depression and fertility
problems. Its benefits for treating wounds, burns and skin lesions
are known by herbal practitioners, who prescribe it for treatment
of persons following surgeries, and women after giving birth. People
suffering from varicose veins and high blood pressure have also
benefited from treatment with Gotu
Kola preparations.
In addition being used for healing wounds, including for women immediately after child birth (to prevent tearing of the vagina tissue) Gotu Kola is also used by geriatrics as an anti-ageing preparation. In China, the plant is known as "the fountain of youth" due to its anti-aging properties.
As a dietary supplement and herbal medicine, gotu kola leaves and extracts are available in a variety of forms, including teas, capsules, tablets, and ointments.
Gota Kola should not be used for long periods as continued use could
result in skin conditions such as lesions, or even skin cancers
(melanoma). It may also cause dizziness, upset stomach, and even
drowsiness if used in excessive doses. It is not recommended to
be taken along with sleep inducing medications such as sedatives.
