India's Deadly Chemical Addiction
Pesticides and insecticides heavily used on the farmland are not only seeping into the groundwater of a small district in Punjab, they are also in the foods we all eat. Traces of these toxic chemicals have been found in the blood samples of the inhabitants of that area and also in people in cities far from there. Not only this, the babies are born with neurological disorders since their parent are exposed to the deadly pesticides resulting in the severe damage of the DNA and genes. It's high time when each one of us needs to be on high alert and educated about the heavy loss we are giving not only to our Mother Earth but also to mankind.

In Fertile India, Growth Outstrips Agriculture
India's economy is one of the fastest growing in the world, and its industrial innovation is legendary but when it comes to agriculture, its output lags far behind potential. Food problems have haunted mankind for decades. But with the introduction of Green Revolution years ago, the food needs of growing population were met as the farmers got enormous support from the government. But since last two decades, the government did not pay much attention to the agricultural and technological needs of the farmers. As a result of this negligence, many farmers find it more profitable to sell their land to developers of industrial buildings rather than doing farming due to two reasons. Firstly, the government policies were not farmer friendly and secondly, they did not receive reasonable prices for their crops. It has been rightly said that "A remunerative price is the best fertilizer for farmers". This statement proved true when the government offered farmers a substantially higher price for their crops and the farmers happily planted more crops in their fields rather than selling their lands to the land-hungry mall developers.

Healthy Recipe for A Healthy Life
Divine Dal Soup
We recommend using all organic ingredients.
(For 6 people)
What you will need:
Turmeric (Haldi): 2 teaspoons
Curry powder: 1 teaspoon
Cumin (Jira) seeds: 1 teaspoon
Coriander powder (Dhania): 1/2 teaspoon
Chilli powder (Mirch): 1/8-1/4 teaspoon (or to taste)
Rock salt (Lahorie Namak): 1+1/2 teaspoon
Red dal (lal masoor dal): 1+1/2 cup, 300 grams
(Dal should be washed and rinsed until water comes totally clean. Leave dal to soak covered in water while vegetables are being prepared.)
Have everything prepared as follows: Onions(Piaz):
2-3 medium chopped Ginger (Adhrak):
a piece the size of half the thumb, chopped Garlic (Lassoon):
6 medium cloves, peeled and crushed 2-3
Tomatoes:
chopped (peeled if possible) Cauliflower (Gobi):
1/2 medium, broken into whole flowerets Pumpkin (Kadu):
4 inch square piece, cut into medium chunks Sweet potato (Sakar Khand):
1 large or 2 medium, cut into medium chunks Loki:
3 inch piece, remove seeds, cut into medium chunks, (or Zucchini): 1-2, cut into full 1 inch rounds Carrots (Gajar):
2 meduim cut into full 1 inch rounds Green pepper (Simla Mirch):
(big size Indian, USA medium size) cut into medium chunks
(Optional additional vegetables, use to your liking and/or depending on availability of above) White
potatoes (Aloo):
2 medium size cut into medium chunks Green French
beans:
amount to taste, leave either full length or cut in 1/2 only Beet root
(Chukander):
(Indian size large, USA medium) cut into medium chunks Green peas
(Matar):
1/3 cup Cabbage
(Pata Gobi):
1/2 of a medium size cabbage cut into medium chunks Fresh Coriander
Leaves (Hara Dhania):
as desired Good Oil, preferably Olive
Oil:
5 tablespoons
Preparation:
In a medium to large heavy-duty sauce pan
or pressure cooker, heat the oil over a low
fire. Add cumin seeds first and a moment later, add the rest of the spices, but not the salt, stir and then add the onions with 1 teaspoon salt sprinkled on top. Stir for one minute. Add ginger and the garlic, & stir shortly, then add tomatoes, turn up fire and stir for one minute.
Add all the rest of the vegetables and the other 1/2 teaspoon of salt and stir for one minute.
Drain the dal, add and stir for one minute.
Add 8 cups of water and bring to boil. Cover and simmer over low fire for 1/2 hour minimum and up to 1 hour, until the dal is smooth, soft and blended into the soup.
If using a pressure-cooker, bring to boil, close lid and let whistle three times. Then close (turn off) the fire and leave for half hour or so, until pressure releases by itself.
As a possibility you can add fresh coriander leaves (Hara Dhania) before serving.
Eat
and enjoy, it's truly divine!
