Shatavari :: Shatavari Formula

The Shatavari plant, also known by its Latin term asparagus racemosus is a woody plant related to the asparagus family. Found throughout southern Asia and in Africa, Shatavari usually grows in shady, low altitude areas. The plant is especially common in northern India. Shatavari is a climbing plant with leaves resembling pine needles, and grows to up to 2 meters in height.

Though this plant has a number of medicinal uses, is it best known for its aid in treating sexually related problems; and treats impotency and infertility in both men an women. It also has been found to be useful in helping older women during menopause, as well as helping to increase breast milk flow in nursing mothers. Perhaps this is why the plant's Indian name means "one who possesses a hundred husbands".

A variety of medicinal uses are attributed to the Shatavari roots, Shatavari leaves, and Shatavari flowers, including treatment for diarrhea, dysentery, gastric problems, coughing and headache problems, and gonorrhea. In its pure natural (freshly picked) state, it can be very good in treating diarrhea in young children by simply boiling the root in milk.

The chemical ingredients in the Shatavari plant, including steroidal saponins, isoflavones, asparagamine (an alkaloid substance similar to aspirin), and polysaccharides, make this plant a natural chemical source. The plant's antitussive (cough suppressant) qualities make it comparable to codeine without the latter's adverse side effects.

In India, Shatavari plant roots or tubers, together with young plant shoots are eaten as food. It is more important for its medicinal uses, however, and as noted previously, treats a number of medical problems. The root is also used to prepare a soap-like substance for washing clothes.

Though natural quantities of Shatavari plants are not usually available in Western countries, extracts and other processed forms can be found in tonics, pills and capsules in most health products and homeopathic medicine stores. It is an important treatment source by Ayurvedic medicinal practitioners; and is fast gaining acceptance as a natural alternative medicine treatment product.
