10 Healthy Recipes for Navratri (and beyond)

It’s Navratri, the season of special ‘fast foods’! Here we add to your repertoire of traditional recipes to make this time of cleansing a delicious and joyous one.


And, why limit only to Navratri? Incorporate the family favourites into your everyday meals and up your health quotient. 


1.   Quinoa Upma


Quinoa is a gluten-free edible seed, high in fiber and minerals.


Quinoa Upma Recipe



1/2 cup ORGANIC INDIA Quinoa
1 small tomato
2 green chilis
½ tsp ginger finely chopped
¾ cup mixed vegetables, chopped
1 teaspoon ORGANIC INDIA Virgin Coconut Oil
1 cup water
ORGANIC INDIA Pink Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) to taste


To temper

2 tsp ORGANIC INDIA Virgin Coconut Oil
½ tsp ORGANIC INDIA Brown Mustard Seed (Rai/Sarso)
1 tsp ORGANIC INDIA Urad Dhuli Dal
2 tsp ORGANIC INDIA Organic Chana Dal
1 tsp chopped ginger
1 sprig of Curry leaves
Coriander leaves for garnishing
10-12 broken cashews



Wash and soak quinoa. Drain and set aside.
Heat oil, add mustard seeds, and splutter. Next, add urad dal, chana dal, cashew nuts, and stir
Once the aroma rises, add ginger, green chili and curry leaves. Follow with chopped veggies
Stir fry for a minute and add chopped tomato. Cook for a minute
Add quinoa. Roast for a minute, stirring
Add salt and warm water. Bring to a boil and cook covered in medium flame for 10 mins
Mix and cook on low flame for 10 mins
Drizzle over extra virgin coconut oil; garnish with coriander
Serve hot with coriander chutney


2.     Vrat Wali Kheer

This is made of Sama rice, a tiny millet grain, also known as Vari, Varai, Sanwa, Samwa and Swang. The ancient gluten free grain is rich is protein, fiber, and antioxidants.





1/2 cup  sama rice or barnyard millet
3 cups milk
12 to 14 chopped cashews
1 tbsp raisins
1/3 cup ORGANIC INDIA Organic Jaggery Powder
4 to 5 cardamoms - crushed
7 to 9 strands of ORGANIC INDIA Saffron



Soak rice in water for an hour. Drain & set aside
In a thick-bottomed saucepan heat milk. Bring to a gentle boil on low to medium flame
Add the Sama rice and stir well
Cover the pan and simmer for 18-20 minutes till the rice gets cooked
Stir intermittently so that the kheer does not get burnt
Melt jaggery in 2 tsp water
Add cardamom and saffron, chopped cashews, and raisins to the kheer
Stir and simmer for a minute till you get a creamy consistency
Let cool a bit and add melted jaggery and mix well
Serve the vrat ke chawal ki kheer garnished with nuts and saffron


3.    Amaranth Kadhi


Rajgira Kadhi or Amaranth flour kadhi is nutritious, gluten-free and delicious.

Amaranth is high in protein and has an abundance of minerals and vitamins.




1/4 cup  ORGANIC INDIA Organic Roasted Amaranth seed flour
1/2 cup yogurt (slightly sour)
Water as required
1 tbsp ORGANIC INDIA - ORGANIC COW GHEE (Clarified Butter)
1 tsp ORGANIC INDIA's Organic Cumin Seed (Jeera)
1 tsp grated ginger
1-2 green chilies chopped
ORGANIC INDIA Pink Rock Salt (sendha namak) to taste
8 to 10 curry leaves
Coriander to garnish



To make amaranth flour

·      Dry roast amaranth seeds in a non-stick pan for 5-7 minutes, stirring


For the kadhi

Whisk curd till smooth
Add the amaranth flour to the curd. Mix well till to get a smooth batter
Keep aside for 10 mins
 Add water, mix well
In a heavy bottom pan, heat ghee, crackle jeera in it
Add ginger and chilies, followed by curry leaves
Saute on low flame for 1-2 mins
Now add the curd flour mixture
Adjust the water consistency as required
Keep stirring to prevent the mixture from getting burnt
Bring this mixture to a boil on medium
Add salt and reduce flame
Let simmer for 10-15 mins
Garnish with coriander



4. Kuttu (Buckwheat) Halwa

Being a fruit seed, Kuttu or Buckwheat is the preferred ingredient during Navratri fasting. Kutu halwa is a wholesome, light, and delicious meal, rich in antioxidants, protein and  dietary fiber.  


Ingredients (2 people)

1 cup buckwheat flour
½ cup ORGANIC INDIA Organic Jaggery Powder 
2 cup water
1 tsp cardamom powder
Dry fruits for garnish



Heat ghee in a pan. Add buckwheat flour. Mix well and cook until aroma arises and color changes to brown
Add jaggery powder and dry fruits. Mix well.
Cook until mixture leaves the sides of the pan. Buckwheat halwa is ready
Transfer into bowls and garnish with chopped almonds



5. Banana lassi

A tasty nourishing drink comes to the rescue during a heavy fasting day. Rich in vitamins and minerals, Bananas are a source of quick energy and support digestive health. 



473 ml plain yogurt (or plant-based yogurt of your choice)
2 bananas  
4 ice cubes
Optional: cardamom
ORGANIC INDIA Multi Floral Forest Honey to taste




Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth
Add more ice if you want a thinner consistency
Season with cardamom powder.





6. Arbi Kofta with Mint yoghurt dip


Perfect tea-time snack for you to try out during the Navratri. Arbi is high in carbohydrates, and fiber, along with important nutrients minerals and vitamins.




250 Gram Arbi/colocasia roots
3-4 tbsp Water chestnut flour
1 Green chili
1/2 inch Ginger, finely chopped
1 tsp Organic Ajwain Carom Seeds
As required ORGANIC INDIA Pink Rock Salt (Sendha Namak)
2-3 tsp Oil


For the dip:

Few sprigs Mint
100 gram Curd
50-gram Cucumber finely chopped
For garnishing fresh Pomegranate pearls




Arbi Kofta

Boil the arbi in a pressure cooker or a pan till it becomes soft
Peel them and add the rest of the ingredients
Mash well uniformly
Shape the batter into cylinders and pan-fry them with some oil till golden brown


Mint Yogurt Dip:

Hang yogurt in a muslin cloth to drain excess water
Mix chopped mint, a pinch of salt and cucumber to the yogurt
Serve Arbi Kofta hot with mint yogurt dip




7.    Flax Seed laddoo

Packed with fiber and omega 3 fats, flaxseed laddoo is a perfect little treat to enjoy for your mid-afternoon snack.





1 cup powdered ORGANIC INDIA flax seed
½ cup almonds, roasted and powdered
½ cup peanuts, roasted and powdered
⅓ cup + 1 tsp powdered ORGANIC INDIA Organic Jaggery Powder
3 cardamom pods



Dry roast the flax seeds, peanuts, and almonds separately. Cool them and slightly remove the skin from the peanuts
Grind them separately and coarsely
Add all the ground ingredients back into the mixer jar along with Jaggery powder and cardamom
Pulse the mixture a few times and taste for sweetness
Add some ghee and run the blender again for few seconds till the mixture comes together
 Make small laddus and refrigerate in an airtight container



8. Kesari Doodh

Kesari Doodh – a nourishing drink, it is a traditional favorite across India.  Rich in antioxidants, Saffron is known for improving mood and alleviating depression.



3 cups whole milk
15 strands of ORGANIC INDIA Saffron
3 teaspoons sugar




Bring milk to a boil
Add sugar, saffron strands and mix well
Simmer for 3-5 minutes
Serve Kesar milk hot or warm
Garnish with cashew, pistas and saffron strands



9.     Vrat ki aloo chaat recipe 


Refreshing, tangy, high-energy snack. A great source of quick energy, potatoes are rich in minerals, antioxidants and carbohydrates. 



2 medium-sized potatoes (aloo)
½ teaspoon roasted ORGANIC INDIA's Organic Cumin Seed (Jeera) powder
1 teaspoon chaat masala powder (optional)
¼ or ½ teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon dry mango powder (amchur)
½ teaspoon lemon juice
ORGANIC INDIA Pink Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) to taste
water for boiling the potatoes
a few coriander leaves or mint leaves for garnishing the potatoes
oil for shallow frying or deep frying.



Parboil potatoes in a pressure cooker or pan with water to which some rock salt has been added
Dice them once cool
Shallow or pan fry the diced potatoes
Drain on paper napkins
Take the fried potatoes in a bowl. Add all the spice powders and salt
Mix well
Sprinkle some lemon juice on the potatoes
Garnish with coriander leaves or mint leaves



10.  Iced Chamomile Apple tea


A great drink to end the day of fasting. Abundant antioxidants support a healthy immune system and aids digestion.




750ml / 3 cups of water
3 ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi Honey Chamomile Teabags
250 – 450ml clear apple juice
Mint to garnish




Brew 750ml chamomile tea and allow this to cool
Add the apple juice and garnish it with mint leaves
Drink hot or have chilled
